Description

The Cape Flats wastewater treatment works is Cape Town's largest facility, with a capacity of 200 ML per day. The plant is located in the southwestern part of the Cape Flats, close to the shore. The facility is at a unique location: it is surrounded by a set of nature reserves. The False Bay Nature Reserve is composed of various protected areas, which include Zeekoevlei and Rondevlei (where a number of hippos roam). A famous birding site, the Strandfontein Birding Section, is also part of the reserve and can be found right next to the wastewater treatment works.
